I have a 1970 E Type 4.2 roadster. Whilst I'm rebuilding the original engine, can I fit an engine from one of the saloons (XJ6?) and, if so, will I have to use any of the ancillaries from the original?
Also, are the mounting brackets in the same place, and will the original gearbox bolt on to such an engine?

Hi, JET. You raise quite a few points here. Also, you don't say which XJ6 engine it is. The blocks are largely interchangeable but there are some variations in cylinder spacing and water ways. Ancillaries, compression ratios and engine timing would all need to be considered. But it is a big job to swap engines twice. Why not just get on with the engine rebuild and get it back in? A lot easier and not as big a job as it may sound.

Hi David. Sorry about the delay but my PC was down! I don't actually have an XJ6 engine - my question was rather which one to use. However, I now agree that it would make more sense to rebuild the original engine. Who do you recommend for mains and big end shells?

John

Hi, John. I think that's the best approach. Regarding parts, you can't go far wrong from using one of the big names such as SNG Barratt. They have a good set-up for parts in Worcestershire, are very friendly and helpful on the phone and ship parts promptly. Tel: +44 (0) 1746 765432. They also have outlets in USA, Holland & France as well as an internet shop at http://www.sngbarratt.com/catalogue/parts/

What part of the country / world are you in?

Hi David. I'm in France but the Car is in Swindon. I'll be there for a few weeks later this month and hope to do some of the work. Can you advise how much wear on the big end and mains journals is acceptable to just fit new shells, as I removed one big end cap in June and it was almost through to the base metal.

the question is not so much how much wear can you get away with but rather what is the condition of the journals on the crank - Big end AND Main. Is it still round; is it scored?

Having taken out the engine and removed the shells, it would be a mistake to risk not having the crank fully checked.

When I did mine (4.2 on E Type and 3.8 on Mk 2) I also had the components fully balanced. I've never regretted it. The engines are beautifully smooth as a result and the incremental cost was well worth it. I did my 4.2 in 1985 and 30,000 miles later (today) it is still running beautifully.

Do the crank, the bores, the pistons, timing chains, chain tensioners, oil pump and clutch. Get the head checked too (valves & guides) and get the engine balanced. Do it properly and with any luck you'll only do it once. Yes, it costs a bit extra but it may avoid having to take it all out again!
